Ni Hao (hello in Chinese) Bloggers!

I hope you will enjoy hearing about my adventures in Shanghai. I will try to remember to post some piccy piccies & share some news every week.

So far, we stayed at the Hilton Hotel for 2 weeks before moving into our new home in the middle of a typhoon with 90 mile per hour winds. At least we know that our home is waterproof! My new room has an en suite playroom & a Harry Potter bath (under the stairs) – which is great fun.

Our old satellite dish fell down in the typhoon.

We have been exploring our new city & have visited a few touristy places like Xintiandi – a Shikumen house museum & to see Ice Age 4 & Taikang Lu. We have been to the fabric market, flower market & wet markets – a bit too many markets – but no one is asking me. I have been to school to get my new uniform (turquoise polo shirts & grey shorts) & for an orientation day. I met my new teacher Mr Grimwood, but I didn’t get the chance to ask my music teach Mr Davies if he likes Pink Floyd yet (Dad’s question).

List of items that Dad has fried: Pancakes, onions, drill, printer, 2 x alarm clocks, 5 adapters [at 240v] (TV is OK so far)

Fun Facts: Topic – Sea Cucumbers.

Sea cucumbers are animals. Not salad. Sea cucumbers are Echinoderms, like starfish & sea urchins. There are 1,250 known species. They live from 5-10 years (if they are not eaten) & can grow up to 2m long (that’s taller than my Grandpa). Sea cucumbers, particularly eggs & young larvae are prey for other fish & marine animals (& Chinese people). They are also enjoyed by (some) man. Some species are farmed as delicacies. Sea cucumbers breathe through their bottoms (sorry to have to mention this). Mum says they are like eating an old hot water bottle in seawater.

Happy Highlights:

La Strada – with Mum for lunch (the best pizza from our research so far)

Kommune – with salt & pepper in test tubes, potato wedges & a MASSIVE chocolate milkshake.

Sherpas – who delivery curry, & pretty much anything else you might want

B&Q – for a new drill for Dad

Xialong Bao – or soupy dumplings – at Din Tai Fung with our favourite waitress  called “Lemon”

Audi A6 – but Dad is not sure about life in the back seat

Shanghai Daily delivered every day – especially when it has a Garfield cartoon

24 hour fruit shop at the end of our lane – I have perfected watermelon juice & Dad has made watermelon vodka jellies

Word of the week (in Chinese, of course): Xiao iren – midget

Chinglish: In a campaign to correct English notices etc – which we read about in the Shanghai Daily – I am looking out to help them.

    Love your blog Thomas! Not being very tecchy – cant really do Facebook as your Dad will testify – I’m hoping that this is how I reply! Keep on blogging so we can find out what you’re up to in Shanghai. Especially Mum’s and Dad’s mishaps and Chinese lessons – better with the cultural stuff than the language I think. Kerry x.

    I really like the blog are you going to do your life everywhere you have been because I did a poster on america. I hope your in the bath alot and chek under the bath often just incase someones lurking under there also have you ever eaten a sea cucomber is the wind really 90 miles per hour.

    Love the blog! Have laughed about the frying – at least your dad has joined the club after I fried the dvd! – now mended! I love the idea of watermelon juice and the jellies!

  12. Loved the first blog. Some questions: have you ever eaten a sea cucumber? How close is Starbucks from your house (am worried about your mum)?
    One suggestion: for the Chinese words can you tell us how to say them?
    One request: a photo of you in your new uniform and a photo of the bathroom …..but not you in your uniform in the bath!


    1. Please see the second comment under Becca for the first Q. The nearest starbucks is about 5 mins away and please wait for the facetime for a photo of the bath.
